SUMMARY
Kaa Yaa Me Sta Maa Ket Fort Albany First Nation Representative & Prevention Services is seeking a dedicated and culturally knowledgeable Cree Translator to support effective communication between our organization and the families and communities we serve. The successful candidate will provide accurate oral and written translation and interpretation services while promoting and preserving the Cree language and culture.
This position plays an important role in ensuring that clients receive information in a culturally respectful and linguistically appropriate manner.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Provide accurate verbal interpretation between Cree and English during meetings, interviews, home visits, community events and other program activities.
· Translate written documents, forms, letters educational materials, policies, and public communications from English to Cree and Cree to English.
· Ensure translations accurately reflect the intended meaning while respecting cultural context and traditional knowledge.
· Assist staff in communicating effectively with Elders, families, caregivers and community members.
· Maintain confidentiality and adhere to organizational policies regarding privacy and professional ethics.
· Remain calm during interpreting session as information shared maybe sensitive, emotional and or stressful.
· Excellent listening skills, always remain neutral and objective.
· Review translated materials for quality, consistency, and accuracy.
· Support the development of Culturally appropriate resources and educational materials.
· Consult with Elders and or knowledge keepers.
· Use translation software to maintain translation databases and terminology.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Fluency in both Cree and English (spoken and written)
· Strong understanding of Cree language, traditions, culture and community values
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills
· Experience providing translation and interpretation services considered an asset.
· Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgement.
· Strong organizational and time management skills
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
· Proficiency with Microsoft office and other computer applications is considered an asset.
· Clear Vulnerable Sector Check
· Ability to work flexible hours as needed and on demand in the event of urgent translation services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
· Certificate or training in translation, interpretation, indigenous studies or a related field is considered an asset.
· Experience working with children, youth, families or indigenous organizations is preferred.
· Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel if required.
