Employment Opportunity: Community Organizer & Storyteller

Salary Range: Less than $20,000
Open to youth living in the Moose River area, aged 18-30.
Position will remain open until filled.
Interviews start May 8, 2025.
Duration: up to 15 weeks
Salary: $20/hr - 35-hour week


Summary                    

This position, jointly created and managed by Nature Canada and the MRHHA, seeks a motivated local youth (18 to 30), to engage the community in shorebird conservation through multiple avenues including the arts (music, pictures, videography, storytelling), surveys of community knowledge, events (e.g. Gathering of our People), intercultural opportunities with Brazil, and supporting school-based initiatives from DDECS and Moosonee Public School.   


Responsibilities

The successful candidate will support or co-lead a number of initiatives aimed at assessing and increasing knowledge of shorebirds locally. Development of the work plan will happen collaboratively with the hired candidate and be based on the following initiatives of interest:


  • Administer a community survey about shorebird knowledge.

  • Help develop a land-based “Shorebirds” tour for inclusion in the MRHHA’s Heritage Tour App

  • Support a contribution by MRHHA and Nature Canada to the Gathering of our People with a focus on shorebirds and youth-focused activities.

  • Support programming with local schools, including participating in and helping to document shorebird observation outings during the first week of June 2025.

  • Engage local artists in telling the story of shorebirds and the homelands they share with us and others, especially in Brazil.

  • Support the MRHHA and its community members and partners in general outreach and engagement initiatives to community members and visitors.

Supervision
  • Supervision and support will be provided by Nature Canada staff and MRHHA.

Location
  • While this position is working out of home, there will be regular meetings with Nature Canada, Moose River Heritage, and Hospitality Association.

  • Plans include a week-long trip to Ottawa, where you will meet and work with Nature Canada and their staff.
