The WAHA Redevelopment Project is a $1.8B initiative in Northern Ontario delivering a state-of-the-art hospital, long-term care facility, and staff and patient accommodations. Due to the remote nature of the project, strong coordination across logistics operations is essential to ensure efficient movement of materials, personnel, and services. 

Reporting to the Team Lead, Community Engagement, the Community Engagement Specialist will support the Project through meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities, stakeholders, and project partners. You will help implement engagement initiatives, support social impact and risk assessments, and bring forward innovative ideas that contribute to positive socioeconomic outcomes for local communities. You will also monitor performance metrics to support compliance with project deliverables and the Indigenous Participation Plan (IPP).

Monthly travel to Moosonee, Ontario is required to build community relationships and support the planning and delivery of engagement initiatives and events.

What you will do:

Support the planning and execution of community engagement activities for the WAHA Redevelopment Project, through the initiatives within the Project’s Indigenous Participation Plan 

Monitor and analyze campaign performance metrics, leveraging data management, forecasting, and reporting to generate insights that guide project planning, business decisions, and contractual obligations. 

Identify and support planning to any social risks to project contracts and participation plans, including solutions to meet these challenges 

Support the IPP through the development of socio-economic baselines, community profiles, and social risk assessments, proactively identifying barriers, gaps, risks, and opportunities that may influence project outcomes and affect communities and stakeholders 

Assist Indigenous Relations (IR) team to deliver upon their contractual commitments and support the development of plans to meet industry best practices 

Prepare project materials and documentation that support the successful delivery of contractual obligations, working closely with partners to achieve project objectives and compliance requirements 

Identify and cultivate opportunities for client, community, and stakeholder engagement in collaboration with Project Managers, Pomerleau teams, and external partners, while maintaining awareness of key cultural, Indigenous, community, and global observances to foster meaningful relationships, promote inclusion, and support project objectives 

Maintain accurate records of the Project’s community engagement activities, ensuring questions and concerns are tracked and resolved to support future strategy, planning, and contractual requirements.

This role could be for you if you have: 

Post-secondary education in social sciences, community development or community relations, policy, or related fields 

5+ years demonstrated experience in community engagement, stakeholder management, or impact assessment activities; facilitating workshops/training, or applying adult learning principles would be an asset 

Strong communication skills with the ability to manage complex relationships. 

Demonstrates initiative, problem-solving and sound decision making in ambiguous and evolving environments. 

Experience working in remote locations or with Indigenous communities is an asset.
